A lab tells you, to the part per billion, whether the contaminants that actually matter for health are present. Here is how to decide, and why the free option comes first.

Should I use a home water test kit or a lab test?
Use a certified mail-in lab test for anything health-related: lead, arsenic, nitrate, PFAS, chromium-6, uranium, bacteria, or any private well. Home strip kits are fine for hardness, chlorine, pH, and a quick check on whether a filter is still removing chlorine, but their detection limits for metals are far above EPA levels and they produce false negatives. Before paying for either, read your utility's report, which is free and covers regulated contaminants.

Are home water test strips accurate?▾
For hardness, free chlorine, total chlorine, pH, and alkalinity, reasonably so, within the coarse color bands printed on the bottle. For lead, copper, arsenic, nitrate, and bacteria they are screening tools at best: their detection limits sit at or above the health thresholds, so a negative result means only that the level is below what the strip can see.
How much does a lab water test cost?▾
A single-contaminant test (lead, nitrate, or arsenic) from a state-certified lab typically costs $20 to $60. A comprehensive city-water panel covering metals, disinfection byproducts, and volatile organics runs $100 to $250; a well panel with bacteria and radiologicals $150 to $350; and PFAS testing $75 to $300 because of the specialized method required.
Can I test my water for free?▾
Often, partially. Many utilities will test for lead at no charge if you request it, especially if you have a lead service line, and some state health departments subsidize well testing for nitrate and bacteria. Your utility's Consumer Confidence Report is free and covers regulated contaminants at the system level, though not your individual tap.
How do I collect a sample correctly?▾
Follow the lab kit instructions exactly, because they differ by contaminant. Lead is usually a first-draw sample after six or more hours of stagnation, from a cold tap with the aerator left on. Bacteria require a sterile bottle and no touching the inside of the cap. Most other tests use a flushed sample. Ship on the day you collect, cold, using the provided label.
Step zero: check your utility data first
If you are on a public water system, your utility is required to test for roughly 90 regulated contaminants and publish an annual Consumer Confidence Report by July 1 (EPA: Consumer Confidence Reports). That report tells you what has been detected system-wide, at what level, and against which EPA limit, and it is free. What the utility report cannot tell you is what happens between the main and your tap. Lead and copper from your own plumbing, bacteria from a leaking fixture, and anything that varies house to house need a test at your faucet. And if you are on a private well, there is no utility report at all: you are the utility, and the EPA and CDC recommend testing at least annually for bacteria and nitrate, and periodically for arsenic, radon, uranium, and anything common in your local geology.

The pattern is clear. Strips work where the thing being measured is present at parts per million and a rough answer is fine. They fail where the health threshold is parts per billion or trillion. The EPA's own guidance is that certified laboratory analysis is the only way to know the level of a health contaminant, and it publishes a directory of state certification programs and certified labs.
When a strip kit is genuinely enough
Strips earn their place in a few situations. Sizing a softener: a hardness strip gives you grains per gallon accurately enough to buy the right unit. Checking a carbon filter: chlorine is the first thing carbon stops removing, so a free-chlorine strip on filtered water tells you whether the cartridge is spent. Chloramine vs chlorine: total minus free chlorine on a strip reveals whether your utility uses chloramine, which changes the filter you should buy. Nitrate screening on a well: a strip reading of zero or 5 mg/L versus 25 or 50 is meaningful, and a high reading justifies the lab test. Aquarium, pool, and pH: fine. What strips should never be used for is deciding that lead, arsenic, or PFAS are absent, or choosing not to filter for an infant's formula water.

This is the cheapest per test and the route to use if you need a result for a real-estate transaction or a regulatory dispute.
