Readings appear here after a plausibility check (values inside the ranges a home kit or lab can actually report) and are grouped by the city page their ZIP belongs to.
Hardness (gpg): USGS classes - soft under 3.5, moderately hard 3.5-7, hard 7-10.5, very hard above 10.5 grains per gallon. Divide mg/L by 17.1 to get gpg. Scale and soap film, not a health issue.
TDS (ppm): EPA secondary (taste) standard 500 ppm. A TDS pen cannot tell good minerals from bad; it is a rough fingerprint of your supply, useful for spotting a change or checking a filter.
pH: EPA secondary range 6.5-8.5. Low pH water is corrosive and pulls lead and copper from plumbing.
Lead (ppb): EPA action level 15 ppb for utilities, but there is no safe level; the AAP wants school taps under 1 ppb. Only a lab can measure it - strips are yes/no at 15 ppb.
Nitrate (ppm as N): EPA MCL 10. Above 3 usually means fertilizer or septic influence; a well-water issue far more than a city one.
Free chlorine (ppm): city water normally carries 0.2-4 ppm so it stays disinfected to your tap; EPA's maximum residual is 4.
PFOA + PFOS (ppt): EPA's 2024 MCL is 4 ppt for each. Lab-only, parts per trillion.
